CQ indigenous elder, Aunty Nicky, is a proud Darumbal woman. Twenty years ago, with a desire for her grandchildren to be able to speak their Darumbal tongue fluently, she set out on a project to recapture the language that was in danger of being lost. Armed with her own language base, Aunty Nicky gathered words from her elders and undertook extensive research, including working with anthropologists and then a linguist to put a spelling system to the language, making it accessible to all. Since then, Aunty Nicky has written three children’s books in the Darumbal dialect and teaches it regularly at Crescent Lagoon school in Rockhampton.
