JUTE Theatre Company has a 26-year proven capacity for delivering high-quality theatre, producing 80 new works, 16 co-productions and undertaking 28 tours throughout state regions.
The company consistently demonstrates a commitment to delivering contemporary regional voices in theatre, creating quality initiatives and powerful methodologies that address regional Art Sector needs.
JUTE Theatre Company’s very successful Write Sparks and Write Out Loud programs were developed by the company in 2016 in response to the needs of regional writers wanting to find the skills to tell their story well.
To date over 27 regional playwrights in Cairns have completed the 9 face-to-face learning modules of Write Sparks delivered over 3 weekends of workshops. Writers have continued to support their learning by accessing our online Write Out Loud program that guides the writer through similar territory but with the advantage of them working at their own pace. Of the playwrights who completed Write Sparks and continued to work on developing their scripts with JUTE through their advanced writing programs, 8 are currently in contention for production by the company within the next 3 years, with plenty more in development. Quality new writing. From the regions. That’s the goal.
This program works. It gives writers the step up to where they want to be.
“(Write Sparks) has enabled me to write two full works, from idea to creative development to delivery (and touring) on stage.”
Roz Pappalardo, Write Sparks 2017
“I found the workshops incredibly beneficial and taught me how to structure my writing for theatre. As a proud Saibai Koedal Awgadthalgal Woman from Torres Strait, I believe we have so many amazing stories to share and that through theatre we can showcase these amazing stories to community. I was previously scared and daunted by the writing process and having done this program feel like I can finally make a start on the many ideas I have had that I want to turn into plays, short stories and screenplays.”
Peggy Kasabad Lane, Write Sparks 101 Program, 2018
“We were given an opportunity to truly create and share all our thoughts and ideas in a totally safe and supportive environment. Write Sparks offers a unique opportunity for regional writers that is like no other. May it continue for many years to come.”
Sarah Louise Speller, Write Sparks 101 Program, 2018
Primarily developed as a program to help new playwrights develop scripts, the workshop material has been deliberately designed to be relevant to writers who are interested in writing novels, short stories and screenwriting. This is a beginners-intermediate program. No prior experience is necessary, and the only pre-requisite is a burning desire to tell a story. The workshops will also give more intermediate writers an opportunity to build their skills and the strength of their work.
